Everything you need to know about garage door spring replacement

Garage door spring repair

Garage door springs, like many other mechanical components on your garage door, are rated for a certain amount of cycles. Different types of springs have different cycle ratings. It is inevitable that eventually, your spring will reach its cycle span and fail, and at that point your door will require a garage door spring repair.

Can I replace the garage door spring myself?

The garage door spring is one of the most critical components of your door. The torsion spring bears the total weight of the door when opening and closing. Therefore, a damaged or broken garage door spring can create a severe danger to your loved ones and property. Additionally, it is vital to never pull on the emergency release (“the red string”) when your door is in the open position. When it comes to garage door spring replacement, our staff always put safety first. Garage door spring repair is extremely dangerous and DIY should be avoided at any cost!

Covid-19 update

During COVID-19 time, there has been a massive shortage of quality garage door springs, and many garage door companies have turned to importing garage door springs from China. Unfortunately, while these garage door springs may be a little cheaper, they typically have a quarter to half the life span of Canadian or USA-made springs.

At Fine Garage Door Repair Calgary, we are particular about the quality of the products used. We are proud to assure you that 100% of our garage door springs are Canadian and the USA, assuring minimum longevity of 10,000 to 12,000 cycles!

Garage door spring types

Oil tempered torsion spring

The steel used to make these springs has gone through an oil tempering process to enhance the strength of the steel and ensure a high cycle spring life. Therefore, oil tempered torsion springs are the most common spring type used throughout Western Canada. In most cases, oil tempered springs are the best selection when performing a garage door spring repair.

Galvanized torsion springs

In galvanized garage door springs, the steel used to make the springs has been through a galvanizing process which prevents the steel from rusting. Therefore, galvanized garage door springs are typically used in extremely high moisture areas. The disadvantage of galvanized springs is that while the galvanizing process makes the springs rust-resistant, it also weakens the steel, and reduces the life cycle of the spring to 7,000 cycles and will require garage door spring repair at an earlier stage.

An oil-tempered spring will easily achieve a 10,000 cycles life span even if some surface rust is on it. Therefore, unless you have an extremely humid environment, oil tempered garage door spring is still the way to go.

Wayne Dalton Torque Master garage door spring system

While most garage door manufacturers use the same standard, tested, and reliable garage door torsion spring system, Wayne Dalton had developed their own garage door spring system called the “Torque Master.” While there are some pros to this system, in our opinion, they are outweighed by the cons.

Pros:

The garage door springs are concealed in the side of the head shaft, and some people may find it more aesthetically pleasing. Also, this garage door spring system requires very little headroom and for that reason, it can be fitted in very tight spaces.

Cons:

Due to the extremely small diameter of this garage door spring, they tend to have a lower life cycle. In the Torque Master spring system, many customers do not realize that one of the two springs has broken, due to the springs being concealed in the head shaft and for that reason, most homeowners will continue to run the garage door with only one intact garage door spring. This can cause extensive damage to the panels, hardware, and garage door opener. Even a simple repair replacing the garage door cable becomes complicated and expensive on the Torque Master garage door spring system.

Conclusions:

We have been disappointed numerous times by the Torque Master system. In cases where the Torque Master spring breaks, we recommend converting to the standard torsion garage door spring system to achieve the best and longest-lasting garage door spring repair.
